MS Student in Building Science, Technology and Sustainability
Kaito Funada is pursuing MS in Building Science, Technology and Sustainability at UC Berkeley. He is passionate about exploring measures to curb embodied carbon in building while balancing effectiveness with economic feasibility. Kaito is particularly excited to join CBE, especially Decarb and IEA Annex 89 project and research with Matt Roberts, a top leading expert in LCA.
Before coming here, Kaito has worked as a senior officer at Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Japan for over seven years. In the government office, he has experience in developing accessibility evaluation methods for post-earthquake scenarios, launching a new subsidy program for seismic retrofitting, reviewing building permit applications and public housing construction. These experiences deepened his commitment to resilient and sustainable urban development.
Kaito holds a BE in Architecture and Urban Design from Ritsumeikan University, Japan, and have participated in several design competitions across Japan and South Korea. His interdisciplinary background bridges policy, design, and technical analysis—now directed toward advancing decarbonization in the built environment.
